Sooners Held to Lowest Scoring Output of Season; Fall at Nebraska

Associated Press

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Brandon Richardson scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half and Nebraska pulled away from cold-shooting Oklahoma for a 63-46 victory and its first Big 12 win Saturday night.

Ryan Anderson added 11 points and Jorge Brian Diaz 10 for the Cornhuskers (13-8, 1-5 Big 12).

Cade Davis scored 13 points to lead the Sooners (12-9, 3-4). Tommy Mason-Griffin, who scored 38 points against Iowa State on Wednesday and was averaging 28.3 in his previous three games, was held to nine.

Oklahoma, winless in four conference road games, shot just 35 percent and scored its fewest points since a 62-45 loss to Texas on Feb. 23, 2008.

Tipoff was pushed back to evening because of a snow and ice storm in Oklahoma that delayed the Sooners' charter flight to Lincoln.

WBB: Sooners Beat Tech on the Road

Sooners fought off a Tech comeback and rebounded against their loss to Iowa State by beating the Raiders, 70-66. Danielle Robinson scored 26 points, which included the go-ahead jumper with just over a minute and two free throws with 9 seconds to seal the win.

The Sooners improved to 15-5 and 5-2 in the Big 12, and Tech fell to 13-7 and 1-5 in conference.

Robinson was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line for the Sooners, who beat Texas Tech for the 10th straight time. Nyeshia Stevenson added 17 points and Amanda Thompson had eight points and 13 rebounds. The Sooners were 18-20 from the line while Tech was just 8-17.

Jordan Murphree scored 16 of her 28 points in the final 9 minutes to lead Texas Tech (13-7, 1-5).

The Sooners built a 10-point lead early in the second, but Murphree closed the gap, converting three-point plays down the stretch. She tied the game at 66 with 1:35 left. That's when Robinson hit a turnaround jumper on the baseline as she fell out of bounds.

The Sooners will host the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday at 7:00 CST.

TMG, Davis lead Sooners

Freshman Tommy Mason-Griffin scored a career high 38 points and dished out 6 assists as OU topped Iowa State, 89-84, in Norman. Cade Davis added 24 as the Sooners, who were playing without Willie Warren and Tony Crocker, improved to 12-8 and 3-3 in conference.

Warren did not play for the second straight game after spraining his ankle in practice last Thursday. Tony Crocker was also out with a sprained right ankle.

OU led by as many as 21 late in the first, but ISU cut the lead to 3 points 4 times in the second. The Sooners were able to hold on by hitting key free trows.

Mason-Griffin and Davis combined to hit 21 of OU's 32 field goals. TMG was 13-21, including 5-10 from behind the arc, while Davis was 9-17 and 4-9 from long distance.

The Cyclones (12-8, 1-4) had 6 players in double figure, led by Diante Garrett's 17, but were unable to come up with the win.

OU will play at Nebraska on the 30th at 12:30 CST.

WBB: Sooners Stumble in Ames

OU could not overcome poor shooting and foul trouble as the Sooners (14-5, 4-2) fell to the Iowa State Cyclones (16-3, 4-2), 56-63.

OU fell behind early because of foul trouble and being unable to block out, and trailed 21-33 at the half. The Sooners were able to limit the Cyclones to five points for the first 9 1/2 minutes of the second to pull within 35-38, but ISU was able to fend off the rally.

The game never acquired a rhythm as 50 fouls were called over the course of 40 minutes. OU had 28, with Danielle Robinson and Abi Olajuwan each fouling out, while Carlee Roethlisberger, Amanda Thompson, and Joanna McFarland each had 4. The teams shot a total of 56 free throws: 15 of 25 for OU and 22-31 for ISU.

Nyeshia Stevenson had 14 points for OU, but struggled shooting, finishing 1-6 from behind the arc. Amanda Thompson had 12 points and 10 rebounds while Danielle Robinson scored 10. Carlee Roethlisberger led a rally in the closing minutes and finished with 9 points and 7 boards.

Kelsy Bolte and Anne Prins each had 15 points for the Cyclones. ISU's main offensive threat, Allison Lacey, had 12, 10 of which came in the first half.

OU will play at Texas Tech on Saturday at 2:00.

Singletary had his fourth double-double of the season.

Sooners Rock Kansas

Oklahoma Head Coach Sherri Coale earned her 300th win at OU as the Sooners dominated the Kansas Jayhawks, 81-69, in Norman. KU, who was picked to tie for 2nd in the Big 12, dropped to 1-4 in conference and 11-7 overall, while the number 13 Sooners, who were picked 5th, improved to 4-1 and 14-4.

The Sooners matched their season low turnovers, only committing 8.

OU started off slow, committing 9 fouls and falling behind 16-6 in the first nine minutes. But the Sooners went on a 31-8 run behind Nyeshia Stevenson to take a 37-24 halftime lead. In that 11 and a half minute time frame, the Sooners didn't commit a foul and drew 10 from the Jayhawks.

"We got down because we were fouling them in the beginning and were missing shots as well. We knew that when we would start to shoot the ball everything would be just fine so we didn’t worry at all,” Said Danielle Robinson.

The Sooners held Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year Danielle McCray to 7 points. Danielle Robinson and Carlee Roethlisberger provided excellent defense and kept McCray in foul trouble.

Nyeshia Stevenson lead all scorers with 22 points, 21 of which came in an 8 minute period with 5:33 in the first to 17:28 in the second. After she went 2-15 in a loss to Baylor, Stevenson made a promise to her teamates.

"I keep going back to the Baylor game. I vowed to my teammates I would never look like that again. As long as I am in this Oklahoma jersey, I will not look like that again.

Over the last 3 games, Stevenson has kept her vow and has scored 20, 23, and 22 points.

AT's Putback Saves Sooners

Amanda Thompson had 13 points and 11 rebounds including the game winning putback with 9 seconds remaining. She missed a layup but got her own rebound and scored as the Sooners escaped the Missouri Tigers, 62-61. The Sooners (13-4) struggled with a lack of intensity and sloppy played and finished with 23 turnovers.

OU improved to 3-1 in the Big 12 conference, while Missouri fell to 10-7 and 0-4 in conference.

OU trailed 25-30 after the first half, but was able to pull ahead early in the first. The game went back and forth throughout the second before Thompson made the go-ahead layup. OU's defense forced Missouri into a long three in the final seconds and Abi Olajuwan was there for the rebound.

OU shot 25-52 for 48% on field goals, including 3-7 on three point attempts. The Tigers shot 22-66, including a 2-22 mark from behind the arc, only 9%.

Sooners Top Aggies

OU WBB beat their first top 10 opponent Sunday afternoon as they beat the Texas A&M Aggies, 74-65. OU's (12-4) only losses came on the road to top 10 teams. However, the Sooners built a large lead and were able to hold on for the win. The no. 8 Aggies drop to 14-2 and 2-1 in conference. OU also improved to 2-1 in the Big 12.

OU led 41-30 at halftime, with their largest being 15 points. But in the second half, the Aggies were able to cut the lead to 60-63 with 6:02 remaining. Danielle Robinson hit 6 free throws in a row to put the game out of reach.

OU was able to hold A&M to 6-21 on three point attempts for 29%. The Aggies also struggled from the free throw line, only hitting 7-15. OU, on the other hand, was 20-24 on free throws, and after a 1-15 effort at Baylor, was 4-12 from three.

Sooners Escape Missouri

Willie Warren scored 21 points as OU topped the Tigers for a 66-61 victory. Cade Davis recoreded his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The Sooners have showed a lot of growth defensively over the last two games, an area they greatly struggled in at the beginning of the season.

Missouri was riding a 9 game winning streak that included an upset of number 10 Kansas State. OU was coming off an 62-57 overtime win against OSU. The Sooners are 11-6 overall, and 2-1 in conference after dropping their first game in an embarrassing loss to Baylor.

OU had a sloppy first half and trailed 27-32 at the break. The Sooners turned the ball over 20 total time, most coming in the first 20 minutes. But OU outscored the Tigers 39-29 in the second half to bring in the win.

Sooners Fall in Waco

OU WBB (11-4) was unable to take advantage of an injury to Baylor leader Melissa Jones and fell to the Bears (14-2), 47-57, in Waco. OU had to deal with early foul trouble while trying to contain 6-8 blocking sensation Britney Griner.

OU fell behind 11-18 midway through the first, but fought back to take a 24-25 lead into halftime. The game see-sawed back and forth before Baylor went ahead for good on Shanay Washington's free throws 4 minutes into the second half. Baylor extended their lead to 37-52 with just under 5 minutes, but OU was able to crawl back and cut the lead to 7, but it was too little, too late as the Sooners were exhausted from the long, hard fought game.

Both teams struggled offensively without their leaders. OU's Whitney Hand is out for the season with a torn ACL and BU's Melissa Jones is out indefinitely with a stress injury.

Danielle Robinson scored 15 and Abi Olajuwan had 10 to lead the Sooners, who shot 30% from the field and were ice cold from behind the arc, finishing 1-15. Amanda Thompson led all players with 12 rebounds.

Kelli Griffin, Britney Griner, and Shanay Washington each scored 12 points for Baylor. Griner also had 11 blocks and was 1 rebound away from a triple-double.

OU did win the turnover battle: giving the ball away 14 times while causing 20 Baylor turnovers. While the Bears shot 18-30 on free throws, OU connected on all 8 of their attempts. These were two positives from the game as OU's Achilles heel has been taking care of the ball and free throw shooting.

OU will play another top 10 team as it host Texas A&M on Saturday.

Griffin's Season Over

Former Sooner and number 1 draft pick Blake Griffin will have season ending surgery on his left kneecap. Griffin fractured his knee during a preseason game with the Clippers and was projected to return in January. Sooners Take Down Cowboys

The Sooners battled hard and finally prevailed in overtime, 62-57, against the OSU Cowboys in Norman. The low scoring game went back and forth the entire span of the 45 minutes but OU ended on top. The Sooners improved to 10-6 overall and 1-1 in conference.

It was a very physical game that saw several injuries. Cowboy James Anderson left with 13 minutes left in the second half with a head injury, but did return later. Willie Warren was plagued once again with cramps, but remained in the game. Cade Davis was shaken up after a hard foul on a drive to the basket, but after laying on the court for a moment, he was able to shoot free throws and finish the game.

OU won by the combined efforts of Willie Warren, Tommy Mason-Griffin, Tiny Gallon, and Cade Davis. Warren struggled with turnovers, as he committed 7 of his team's total 15. But he did lead the Sooners with 15 points and had 7 of OU's 10 assists. TMG scored 14 along with 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and no giveaways. Tiny Gallon finished with 11 points, but was a monster on the boards and grabbed 18 rebounds. Cade Davis continued to give great effort and finished with 9 points and 3 steals.

After Anderson left the game, OU held OSU to only one made field goal over the next 12 minutes. TMG missed two game-clinching free throws with 10 seconds left, and Anderson made a lay up with 5 seconds remaining to force the OT.

OSU star James Anderson scored 18 points to lead all scorers in the game, and Marshall Moses chipped in 16 points and 13 rebounds. OSU only dished out 4 assists on the night.

Both teams were atrocious in free throw shooting: OU finished 12-23 for 52%, while OSU shot 14-23 for 61%. OU only shot 38% from the field, but was able to hold OSU to 28%, including 5-25 from behind the arc.

OU remain in Norman and returns to action on the 16th when they face the Missouri Tigers at 12:00 CST.

Sooners Mauled by Bears

OU headed to Waco looking to maintain a 56 year, 30 game win streak versus the Baylor Bears, but then they ran in to block monster Ekpe Udoh and fell hard, 60-91. OU started out strong, leading 20-11 in the first before the Bears closed the half on a 30-6 run. By that time it was over, as Baylor continued to dominate in every aspect of the game. Any run by the Sooners was ended by a massive dunk by Baylor's Quincy Acy, who had three throw downs in the second.

OU was unable to stop the three point shooters, as Baylor shot 10-20 from behind the arc. The Sooners were also out rebounded 22-38.

Tiny Gallon and Tony Crocker were the only Sooners to finish in double figures, with 17 and 16, respectively. Willie Warren was held to only 9 points, while shooting 3-9. Tommy Mason-Griffin did not enter the game until the second half and had 6 points.

Baylor was led by LaceDarius Dunn, who had 28 points while shooting 6-8 on three point attempts. Tweety Carter had 18 points and 10 assists, while Ekpe Udoh had 14 points, 8 boards, and 7 blocks.

Sooners Win Big 12 Opener

OU WBB opened conference play with a 73-58 home victory over the Texas Tech Lady Raiders. The Sooners improved to 11-3 while Tech dropped to 12-3. Tech hung around for the majority of the game, but didn't connect on a field goal in the last 6:53. The Sooners were sloppy in the first half, committing 21 turnovers in the game.

Nyeshia Stevenson grabbed a career high 10 rebounds to go along with 11 points. Amanda Thompson built on her strong outing against Tennessee, leading the Sooners with 17 points. She also had 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Danielle Robinson spent much of the 1st half on the bench because of foul trouble but still finished with 15 points. Abi Olajuwan had 12 points, Carlee Roethlisberger has 8, and Joanna McFarland had 7.

OU shut down Jordan Murphree, who usually has strong outings vs. the Sooners, and held her to 0-8 field goals and only 2 points. OU led by 36-31 at the half and finally wore down the Raiders late in the second.

OU plays Wednesday at Baylor, who lost at OSU today.

Sooners Obliterate Maryland Eastern Shore

Cade Davis scored 19 points as OU (9-5) coasted to a 88-54 over the Hawks (3-10). Maryland E.S. was completely over-matched in talent and athleticism and never threatened as Davis scored the game's first 7 points. The Sooners had a comfortable 47-29 lead at half, and rolled easily the rest of the way. OU forced 18 turnovers and only gave the ball away 7 times.

Willie Warren scored 15 for OU as well as 5 assists. Both Tony Crocker and Tiny Gallon grabbed 12 boards, and each scored 14 and 13 points, respectively. Tommy Mason-Griffin struggled shooting, finishing 2-7 for 5 points, but excelled at the point, handing out 7 assists to no turnovers.

Saturday, January 2, 2010

Sooners Drop One to Tennessee, 75-96

OU was able to hang close with the 4th ranked Lady Vols until midway through the second half, before Tenn. used their size and athleticism to wear down the no. 15 Sooners. OU started the hot, jumping out to a 17-8 lead early in the first, but then cooled down and trailed 39-45 at the break. Shekinna Stricklen had the second triple-double in Lady Vol history with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists.

Tennessee out-rebounded OU 26-46, with 20 of them coming on the offense. The Volunteers were also 10-16 from the three point line, for an incredible 62.5%.

OU held Tennessee to only 2 three pointers in the first, but were unable to contain Angie Bjorklund who finished with 25 points by shooting 5-8 from behind the arc.

Amanda Thompson led all scorers with a career high 26 points. She finished 10-13 from the field and grabbed 11 boards. Danielle Robinson scored 10 points and dished out 10 assists, but the Sooners definitely needed more scoring from their leader. Nyeshia Stevenson scored 17 points while Carlee Roethlisberger chipped in 14.

OU only played 7 players, one of which, Jasmine Hartman, only played when the game was far out of reach. The Sooners didn't get any points from their bench, either.

OU begins conference play on January 9, when they have a 3:30 date with Texas Tech at the Lloyd Noble Center.

Morrison to Join Sooners

Walk-on Kodi Morrison will join the Sooners WBB for the second semester. The addition will bring OU's team to 10 active players. Morrison graduated last May, and will be eligible to begin play in OU's match vs. Texas Tech on January 9.
